HAMPTON ROADS, VA. (10/28/08)–With U.S. politics being on everybody’s mind it was only right that Centura College celebrated the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. The students, faculty and staff of Centura College, Virginia Beach campus, participated in a campus-wide celebration on September 17th with respect to the single most important document of our self-government.
The Constitution and Citizenship Day Celebration started by “observing” the signing of the Constitution by watching the movie “A More Perfect Union: America Becomes a Nation”. In the days leading up to the celebration, the instructors encouraged the students to visit the library to learn more about the Constitution of the United States of America and to participate in a competition to find the “missing link” in a display case of replicas which pertained to the formation of our present-day U.S. Constitution. While researching interesting facts and solving the “missing link”, students used their knowledge to complete questions to be entered into a contest. The following students were winners: LaToya Kirkley, Medical Assisting; Lisa Lewis, Business Management; Bernice Lowery, Medical Assisting and Christiana Von Schimpf, Paralegal. The grand prize winner of “What is the Missing Link?” was Ann Herring-Davis, Massage Therapy Student. The trivia winners received $10.00 gift cards to Barnes & Noble and Starbucks. The grand prize winner received a $25.00 gift card to Wal-Mart.
“It was a fun and educational way to acknowledge our nation’s history and an overall good celebration for all the staff, faculty and students that participated,” declares School Director, Beth Hall, “With the current election coverage everywhere you look, it’s important to remember the history and the roots of our government and how it important it is to participate in that government.”
