CHESAPEAKE, Va. (April 4, 2023) – Centura College celebrated receipt of a $100,000 Sentara Scholars grant with a check presentation this morning at their Chesapeake campus. Centura College is one of 19 schools who received a grant from Sentara Healthcare’s Sentara Scholars program, which aids in the development of the next generation of healthcare workers. This grant will help students in various medical programs across Hampton Roads pursue an education.
Sentara Healthcare is investing more than $3 million in Sentara Scholars, a student assistance program designed to provide financial support to students in healthcare and healthcare-related programs. The goal of Sentara Scholars is to help remove financial barriers that prevent student enrollment and retention. Sentara Scholars will be made available to students through partnerships with academic institutions and non-profit organizations throughout Virginia and North Carolina. Recipients will be selected from a combination of merit and need-based criteria.
“I am eager to see where this grant takes our students in the Hampton Roads region. Supporting them through their education and into rewarding careers in our community is what Centura College does, and we are proud to have the Sentara Healthcare System’s support,” said Lenard Merritt, Regional Director.
Centura College has 3 campuses in the Hampton Roads region and provides training in medical billing and coding, medical assisting, and dental assisting. Centura College alumni who are current Sentara employees will take part in the awardee selection process and scholarship awardees will go on to work for Sentara. This will help build the pipeline of healthcare workers in Hampton Roads and further the partnership between employers and educational institutions.
