NORFOLK, Va. (Oct. 26, 2023) – A representative from Nauticus stopped by Centura College’s Norfolk campus last week to see students in action as they prepare holiday silhouettes for WinterFest on the Wisconsin. Along with sister school, Tidewater Tech, Centura College is proud to continue their partnership with Nauticus for the third consecutive year. WinterFest, held annually at Nauticus on the USS Wisconsin, boasts over a million lights, and a variety of entertainment and treats.
Students and faculty at Centura College and Tidewater Tech have dedicated their time and skills to construct holiday decorations that will be featured as part of the festive displays at WinterFest this year and beyond. At Centura College’s Norfolk campus, students in the Carpentry program are working on 24 hand-crafted tree silhouettes, a lantern, and stars.
By sponsoring WinterFest, Centura College aims to bring cheer and delight to visitors of all ages and engage students with hands-on learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. Centura College’s Carpentry program is a 12-month program that provides students the opportunity to gain technical skills to build, install and/or repair residential, commercial, and industrial structures. The program offers hands-on and troubleshooting applications in assembling and aligning walls, building roof systems, blueprint reading, and the safe usage of various hand and power tools needed for the trade.
Ben Clark, Director of Outreach & Development, stated “Centura College and Tidewater Tech are honored to partner with Nauticus and Winterfest on the Wisconsin for a third year in a row. Allowing our carpentry students to build some of the holiday decorations gives an enormous sense of pride, confidence, and graduation motivation to our students. Public-private partnerships like this showcase how the community can come together for the greater good of students, Hampton Roads citizens, Veterans, and the local workforce. We appreciate the on-going partnership with Nauticus and the City of Norfolk.”
