NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Oct. 12, 2023) – Yesterday, twenty-five high school juniors and seniors from Hampton City Public Schools participated in the “Try-A-Trade” program at Centura College’s Newport News campus. The program provided hands-on experiences and emphasized the significance of trades in today’s workforce and highlighted the potential for success in these fields.
“Try-A-Trade” consisted of three rotating stations focusing on essential life skills. The stations covered topics in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) tool terminology and utilization and HVAC systems troubleshooting. In the medical skills section, students learned to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), check vital signs, and the importance of proper hygiene. Students also learned tips for managing anxiety. By engaging in hands-on activities, they gained practical knowledge that will benefit them in life and in their potential careers.
Centura College Campus Director, Angel Foreman, said, “We were honored to host the students at Centura College. Our students learn by demonstration and practice, and we wanted to offer high school students a glimpse into that tangible training and the importance of trade skills. We would like to express our gratitude to Mr. Kenely, the College and Career Coach at Hampton High School for allowing us this opportunity.”
